The 2004 Lowe's Presents the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie 300 was the 29th race of the 2004 NASCAR Busch Series season held at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The race was held as a night race on Friday, October 15, 2004 on TNT. The race was commentated by Allen Bestwick, current driver Kurt Busch, and Benny Parsons. Matt Yocum, Dave Burns, and Marty Snider  served as pit reporters. Greg Biffle entered the race as the defending winner, while Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch would drive Spongebob Squarepants and Patrick Star sponsored cars in the race in promotion of The Spongebob Squarepants Movie. The race would be 200 laps on the 1.5 asphalt surface. Mike Bliss would lead 19 laps and go on to win his first career race in the Rockwell Automation Chevy

In 2004, qualifying was still under the traditional single-car method, where one car would make a lap, pull into the pits, and allow the next car to go out onto the track. Casey Mears would win the pole in the #41 Discount Tire Dodge. 15 cars missed the race.

Race ReportEdit

Casey Mears would start the race from the pole position and lead the opening thirty-five laps. Jason Keller would crash on lap 5 on the back straight and ended up finishing 30th; 21 laps down. The race would go back green on lap 8, and Mears would loose the lead to Joe Nemechek on lap 36. Nemechek would crash just a lap later, and finish in last place. The race restarted on lap 43 with Martin Truex Jr. taking the lead. Boston Reid and Derrike Cope would crash in the front stretch on lap 49 to bring out the third caution. Mears would retake the lead after the ensuing restart on lap 55. Kasey Kahne would crash on lap 62 on the back straight, and bring out the forth caution. Hermie Sadler and Robby Gordon would lead for several laps under the fifth caution between laps 78-82 when Reid crashed again in turn two. Jimmie Johnson would take the lead from Gordon in the Spongebob Squarepants Chevy on lap 83, before handing the lead to teammate Kyle Busch in the Patrick Star Chevy on lap 103. Busch would lose the lead to Johnson under the sixth caution, which was for debris on lap 124. Johnson would lead until lap 136, when Matt Kenseth took the lead under the next caution flag for Aston Lewis spinning in turn two. David Stremme would lose an engine on lap 143, dropping oil onto the track which required a lengthy clean up. The race would restart on lap 153, but only three laps later Aaron Fike and Stanton Barrett would crash on the front straight to bring out the ninth caution. The race would restart again on lap 163. On lap 169, Mike Wallace, Tim Fedewa, and Casey Atwood would crash, bringing out the tenth caution. The race would restart again on lap 172, before Robby Gordon spun on lap 178 to bring out the eleventh caution. Mike Bliss would take the lead from Kenseth on the restart on lap 182. Dave Blaney would bring out the last caution on lap 187. Bliss would hold off Kenseth and win the race after leading the last 18 laps to score his first career win in the Busch Series. Johnson would end up 3rd in the Spongebob Chevy, ahead of defending winner Greg Biffle in 4th, while Busch would end up 5th in the Patrick Chevy.
