Nickelodeon is the telvision network that airs Spongebob Squarepants . It began back in 1977 as Pinwheel. It aired it's first live-action children's program in 1984 with Out of Control and Danger Mouse. The later ran for nine years, while Out of Control was cancelled after just one season. After airing several more unsuccessful live-action series out, the channel began to work on its first animated series. On August 11th, 1991 three animated series aired. Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy , and Doug . Rugrats ran for 172 episodes, was Nickelodeon's most popular show between 1995-2000, and stopped in 2004. Ren & Stimpy had controversy, but did have moderate success. It ran until 1996. Doug stopped in 1995, but was bought by Disney and aired until 1999 on that network. Spongebob Squarepants began in 1999, is currently Nickeldeon's most popular and longest running show. Spongebob is still airing today and has surpassed Rugrats as the longest Nicktoon. Series such as Sam and Cat, The Fairly Odd Parents, The Thundermans, The Haunted Hathaways, and Henry Danger are currently airing on Nickelodeon. The channel is split into three networks, Nick Jr., which airs programs designed for young children, during the late mornings to early afternoons on the weekdays. Nickeledeon from early afternoon to late evening on weekdays, and from morning to evening on weekends. Nick at Nite, which contains adult programming, airs during the nights.
